Diving the Atlantic

09-18-21- Today I dove an artificial reef off the coast of North Myrtle Beach SC. The “Charleston Tug” was a great dive, the water was a warm 82 degrees and the visibility was excellent.

The tug sits upright in 63ft of water about 8 miles off shore. An early 6:30am 😳 start led to a quick boat ride from the marina in Calabash, NC. Coastal Scuba was the charter operator and the friendly crew made it a very pleasant experience. They have tons of great reviews and I can see why, definitely should be your first choice if you find yourself in SC looking to dive.

One cool thing about being a solo traveller is getting to meet people, or in the case of SCUBA and the implied buddy system, having to meet someone, either as a hired guide or by making friends on the boat. I was lucky and met a cool diver named Jeff from NC and we hit it off, similar dive styles and experience levels allowed us to be a good buddy team and now I have a new friend on the East Coast!

I got some pretty good shots with my underwater camera and also added a video to the 10 Seconds of Zen page for my non-diving friends to enjoy the sites and sounds of the dive.

There were large schools of bait fish all around the tug and Jeff and I got into a groove of just hanging in the water until they surrounded us. For a brief moment you could feel like they had accepted you as one of their own. It would last for a few minutes and then they would dart off as the ever present barracudas make an appearance. So much fun!

I’ve only ever been in the Atlantic off the coast of Florida and I was very surprised and pleased with this dive, great visibility and 82 degree water is hard to beat.

Here is some video, its unedited but shows all the amazing fish schooling around the tug check out the barracudas swimming around the edges!

All in all a great day on the water!
