Cedar Breaks National Monument, Utah

6-27-21: I had scheduled a night at Point Supreme campground in the Cedar Breaks National Monument as a way to break up the drive from Zion NP to Moab. I had not done much research and just figured it would be a quick stop on the way to someplace cool.

Well IT IS someplace cool!

I’ll get to the actual monument in a minute but first let me rave about the campground. The listing on recreation.gov said that it would be dry camping, meaning there would be no water/power/sewer and it listed vault toilets as the only amenity. Turns out this was the coolest secret spot, a pretty small campground with maybe 50 sites but it had real restrooms and showers too. My spot had 15 amp electric, which is enough just to run my refrigerator and keep things charged up. Few weeks on the road and it doesn’t take much creature comfort to get me excited I guess.

Oh and the monument? Well see for yourself:

I even had time for a quick hike and did the Alpine Lake loop trail which was a great little hike with lots of great views over the canyon as well as the little lake.

While chatting with the amazingly nice camp host he mentioned that since it was the weekend there would be a star gazing event at the North overlook. Of course I had to go check it out. Starting at 10pm, the Rangers had 3 very nice telescopes set up and were giving talks explaining the basic constellations and planets that were visible in the very dark sky. In contrast to the 100 degree day down below in the valley it got very cold and windy but I was enjoying it so much, I just kept going back to the truck for more layers until I finally ran out at about 11:30pm. The Rangers were so enthusiastic and informative if you ever get a chance to attend one of these events you really should!

As Arnold so famously said “I’ll be back”
