Bristlecone forest

My last full day in Lone Pine and I was off early to drive up and explore the Ancient Bristlecone forest. Located in the White Mountains high above Bishop CA this forest contains trees that only grow above 9000 feet are believed to be over 4000 years old.

Just over an hour over a winding road and you arrive at the Schulman Grove visitors center. While it is paved this road is not for the faint of heart, there are mostly no guardrails and the drop off is heart stopping. 10 and 2 and keep your eyes on the road!

The center was closed today but there are self guided tours and walks you can enjoy. I wanted to visit the Patriarch grove where the biggest of the trees are located. It is a further 13 miles on gravel and provided some amazing views as well.

Nice views on the drive up to Patriarch grove
My lunch spot at 10,200ft with the Eastern slope of the Sierras as a backdrop

I really enjoyed the visit and learning about the trees. I think I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves on this one. Enjoy.

Truly an amazing experience, the trails were nice and easy considering the high altitude kicking your butt. The trees are beautiful and I would love to come back and catch some shots at night during a full moon.
