4-7-21: Leaving Eastern Oregon, I’m heading back towards Central Oregon to stay at Susan Creek Campground on the North Umpqua River. I’m hunting for more waterfalls!
Truly, I am amazed at how many waterfalls there are in Oregon, especially with it being such a dry year. The official state motto is “ alis volat propriis” or “She flies with her own wings” but I think someone should start a campaign to change it to the “The waterfall state”, makes more sense to me. 🙂
On the way to camp I stopped and visited several falls, in total I counted 6 named waterfalls between Diamond Lake and Glide, OR. I am sure there are many more small un-named falls that don’t have easy access with visitor centers.
Sadly, this area experienced wild fires in 2020 and many parts of the North Umpqua Trail were still closed for clean up. I had hoped to ride some of this famous trail during my visit. I was able to hike a few miles on the Emerald trail right from camp until hitting closures in both directions on the N.U.T. right at the famous Tioga bridge.

Susan Creek Campground was very nice, right on the river and the camp hosts keep it as neat as a pin, even the gravel in my site was raked in a decorative circle! Very zen like…

I visited more waterfalls on my second day, the famous Toketee falls did not disappoint.
Next up was Watson Falls, with a vertical drop of 293ft it is recognized as the 2nd highest waterfall in Oregon (Multnomah falls on the Columbia river near Portland is the highest with a vertical drop of 620ft).
Back at camp after a full day of hiking and bagging waterfalls, I was ready for some chow! For dinner I tested out the Otzi flat pack grill on a nice rib eye and some andouille sausage, it turned out great!

I ran the generator and it was able to fully recharge the RV batteries by running for just 1 hour. This was my first real test of the generator and I am very happy with the results. Overall, I’m thrilled with how the trailer is working out and am getting more confident towing/backing and learning all the RV tricks required to live on the road. After all, the big road trip starts in just a few weeks! More adventures to come!
